Conroy'sFlowersTorrance-Iris

**Iris (Iris spp.)** is a diverse group of flowering plants that boast striking, often ornately detailed blooms. Its name is derived from the Greek word for "rainbow," which is fitting given the myriad colors in which the Iris flower appears.

**Description:**
Irises typically exhibit tall, slender, green leaves that form a fan-like pattern. The flowers, distinguished by their unique shape with upward-standing petals called "standards" and downward-sweeping petals known as "falls", can be found in shades ranging from blues and purples to yellows, whites, oranges, and even browns.

**Symbolism:**
The Iris symbolizes hope, faith, wisdom, courage, and admiration. It's also associated with royalty due to its regal appearance and colors.

**Care:**
They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Depending on the species, some irises are drought-tolerant while others require regular watering. Regular division every few years helps promote vigorous growth.

**Uses:**
Beyond ornamental gardens, Irises are sometimes used in perfumes and traditional medicine. Their rhizomes, particularly from the Iris germanica, are the source of orris root used in perfumery.
